You heard that from Danielle.
Spring in Tennessee is beautiful—wildflowers blooming, longer days, front porch sittin’ weather… until it’s not.
One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s hailing golf balls and your trash can is halfway to Kentucky.
Welcome to storm season in the South.
Here at The Stack Agency, we get a lot of calls this time of year that start with something like,
“Sooo, a tree fell on my car, and I’m not sure if I’m covered…”
Let’s talk about what your insurance should include, common storm-related surprises, and how to handle a claim when the weather gets wild.
What Your Policy Should Cover
When it comes to spring storms, here’s what you want to make sure is in place:
Home Insurance
-
Wind, hail, and tornado damage (make sure this isn’t excluded in fine print)
-
Roof replacement coverage—check if you have actual cash value or replacement cost
-
Debris removal and tree damage
-
Water damage from rain or leaks (but not floodwater—more on that in a sec)
Auto Insurance
-
Comprehensive coverage—this is what protects you from falling limbs, hail damage, or that trampoline that got personal with your windshield
-
Rental reimbursement—if your car’s in the shop after a storm
Flood Insurance
Important note: Flooding is NOT covered under your standard homeowner’s policy.
If your yard turns into a swimming pool every April, it might be time to look into a separate flood policy.
Common Misconceptions
“My policy will replace my roof no matter what.”
Not always. Some policies reduce payout for older roofs or only cover the depreciated value. Ask us to review yours so you’re not shocked later.
“If water comes in from outside, I’m covered.”
Only some water damage is covered. Water that comes through a broken window during a storm? Likely yes. Groundwater flooding into your basement? Probably not (again—flood insurance!).
“I’ll wait until something happens to check my coverage.”
That’s risky. Insurance is kind of like being stuck on the toilet without toilet paper—you don’t realize how much you need it until it’s not there.
How to File a Claim When Mother Nature Throws a Fit
-
Document everything. Take photos and videos of the damage before any cleanup starts.
-
Call your agent (that’s us). We’ll walk you through next steps and help you decide if filing a claim makes sense.
-
Prevent further damage. Tarp that roof, board that window—this helps avoid extra damage that your policy might not cover.
-
Keep receipts. Any emergency repair or lodging expenses? Hold onto them. They might be reimbursable.
A Note From Danielle
I’ve seen storms turn someone’s ordinary Tuesday into a week of chaos. That’s why it matters so much to have the right protection before the sky goes dark.
My job—and my heart—is making sure that when something bad happens, you’re not left figuring it out alone. You’ve got Kenzi and me right here in Clarksville, ready to help you review your policy, make smart choices, and sleep a little easier when the wind picks up.
You deserve peace of mind, not panic.
So go ahead—reach out. We’re here for you.
