Breast Cancer Changed My Perspective on Life Insurance

By Danielle Stack, The Stack Agency

A few weeks ago, I went in for what I thought was a routine mammogram.

Like most of us, I had a busy schedule, a business to run, a family to love, and a hundred things on my to-do list. Cancer wasn’t something I expected to hear about that day.

Then came the callback.

Then the ultrasound.

Then the biopsy.

Then the words nobody ever wants to hear:

“You have breast cancer.”

At 44 years old, I found myself sitting on the other side of the table.

For nearly a decade, I’ve spent my career helping families prepare for the unexpected through insurance. I’ve talked to countless people about protecting their homes, cars, businesses, and most importantly, their families.

But when the diagnosis became personal, it reminded me of something I tell people every day:

Life can change in an instant.

Thankfully, my cancer was caught early. My pathology results came back Estrogen and Progesterone Positive and HER2 Negative, which is encouraging news. There are still appointments, treatment decisions, and unknowns ahead, but I have every intention of fighting this with everything I’ve got.

As I’ve shared my diagnosis, something unexpected has happened.

People have reached out asking questions about life insurance.

Not because they’re thinking about dying.

Because they suddenly realize how quickly life can throw a curveball.

One phone call.

One doctor’s appointment.

One diagnosis.

And suddenly options that were available yesterday may not be available today.

The Life Insurance Conversation Nobody Wants to Have

Most people think they’ll get life insurance later.

After the kids are older.

After the house is paid off.

After they lose weight.

After business slows down.

After the next birthday.

The problem is that life doesn’t always wait for our timeline.

Once a significant health diagnosis appears on your medical records, obtaining life insurance can become more difficult, more expensive, or in some cases unavailable depending on the situation and carrier.

That’s why I encourage people not to wait.

The best time to purchase life insurance is when you’re healthy and have options.

Not because you expect something bad to happen.

Because none of us do.

Life Insurance Is Really About Love

Over the years, I’ve learned that life insurance isn’t about death.

It’s about love.

It’s about making sure your spouse can stay in the home.

It’s about making sure your children can continue their education.

It’s about protecting the business you’ve worked so hard to build.

It’s about giving your family financial stability during one of the most difficult moments of their lives.

When I received my diagnosis, I wasn’t worried about myself.

I thought about Davis.

I thought about my children.

I thought about all the people I love.

That’s exactly why life insurance matters.

What My Diagnosis Has Taught Me

Cancer has reminded me that tomorrow is never guaranteed.

It’s reminded me to appreciate every ordinary day.

It’s reminded me to slow down and accept help from others.

And it’s reminded me why the work we do at The Stack Agency matters.

Every day we help families put a safety net in place before they need it.

Because insurance isn’t about preparing for the worst.

It’s about protecting the people you love the most.

If you’ve been putting off the life insurance conversation, let this be your sign.

Don’t wait for a diagnosis.

Don’t wait for a health scare.

Don’t wait until it’s too late.

Have the conversation today.

You focus on living your life. We’ll make sure it’s protected.

Real Guidance. Better Coverage. More Peace of Mind.
